December 3, 2018 -“Switching Projects”

Hello, everyone!

The blog can resume normal procedures, now that all of my assignment for my classes have been submitted. Before the hiatus, I mentioned that my current project was the Thomas and Georgine Mickler Map Collection. My task was to ensure the finding aid was up to date with its information.

Though the Mickler Map finding aid’s data matched 2005-2006 records, I was able to find the majority of the collection occupying different drawers in the flat file cabinets. Unfortunately, I discovered 20 maps in the collection remain unaccounted for. Despite the search attempts in the flat file drawers between Mr. Ogreten and myself, the missing maps still were not found. As such, Mr. Ogreten reassigned me to research and create catalog headings for a list of publications in the Special Collection backlog.

Mr. Ogreten gave me a guide for the style of headings needed for the catalog and I started to register the publications into a Word Document accordingly. In addition, researched the UCF Library and WorldCat databases for entries regarding periodicals and printed the relevant data for them. These various periodicals were published from the 1950s to the 1980s, mostly from a Socialist perspective.

These Leftist periodicals commented on the events of the Cold War era – the Eisenhower Administration, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Iran Hostage Crisis, and, of course, the Reagan Administration. Though their opinions did not interest me, they still remained historically significant. The physical status of the periodicals ranged from fair to beyond poor. Two issues of Anvil in particular need serious treatment due their fragile state (brittleness from exposure to dry heat).

Alas, I did not finish last week or today. Mr. Ogreten said to take my time with it and I am not hurrying through this heading assignment. My progress remains more profound as today also marked the beginning of my extended work hours. Tomorrow, my shift begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 5:00 PM. Expect the corresponding blogpost to be later in the day as a result.

In review, my assignment changed from the Mickler Map collection to creating headings for periodicals in need of cataloging and my hours have been extended for the rest of December. Tomorrow, I resume the heading assignment and possibly complete it. Until then, welcome back! Enjoy the evening and stay safe! Bye!
