June 28, 2018 – “Farewell, Senpai”

Hello, everyone!

As previously stated in yesterday’s post, there were two objectives that I set out to accomplish today: Finish Box 11 and thank Kae, if I saw her. Those two objectives were met, plus some additional milestones were accomplished as well. Before disembarking for the weekend, here is the full report of the day’s events.

When I entered the office, the top objective was to finish Box 11 before the end of the day. Resuming from yesterday, there were little difficulties in securing the appropriate folders (unlike the incident from yesterday). So, finishing Box 11 did not take as long as I thought it would. As I moved on to Box 12, Courtney startled me around 9:35 AM and she assisted in retrieving five folders at a time while I relabeled them. This system continued until the need for Box 13 came apparent.

The overall plan is to eventually reuse boxes in the collection once an old box had been completely depleted. Today marked the first time such a thing happened. Box 69 was repurposed into the new Box 13. However, its contents still needed to be relabeled and the spreadsheet updated. Unfortunately, this process left Courtney with nothing to do.

There was nothing I could have her do in the meantime while I relabeled the folders in Box 13. Having her sit and wait for me gave me a guilty feeling. I stomached through it and our system resumed into Box 14. By the time Courtney left, seventy-five percent of Box 14 was filled. Around the same time, Kae came into the office.

While her duties included doing an inventory check in room 150 on the first floor, I did shake her hand and personally thank her for help. She thanked me for the help I gave her as well. After this touching moment, she went to the first floor. Kae would later come back to the fifth floor.

With Box 14 mostly filled, I thanked Kae again since I was not going to be at the office tomorrow (her last day). I also told her that I wished her well in finding a job that she enjoys and would pay her well, too. She also wished me well in my endeavors. After saying farewell to my senpai (Japanese term for “senior colleague”), I departed for the day.

With this report concluded and my objectives met, this week at the archives comes to a close. I do sincerely wish Kae well in the weeks ahead and perhaps we will meet again somehow. As I do not have work tomorrow, expect the next entry on Monday. Until then, enjoy the weekend and stay safe! Bye!
