Week Three Review: September 5 – 7, 2017

This the review of week three of my internship from September 5 to September 7, 2017. Labor Day was on Monday, so there were no classes and the approach of Hurricane Irma made the University of Central Florida decide to cancel classes on Thursday, September 7 and the campus would be closed until next Tuesday. Despite this rather short week, I was able to put some time in as much as I could. At least I had one full day this week.

On Tuesday, I had a conversation with Ms. Rubin and we were hopeful that I would be finished with the O’Shaughnessy Collection within the next couple of weeks. Hurricane Irma has certainly pushed the timetables back a couple of weeks and making this goal nearly impossible.

Regardless, I began my day by continuing my review of the VHS tapes in the main box. The first VHS tape featured another black and white copy of the footage of UCF vs. Morehouse College game from November 17, 1979 and the UCF vs. Emory & Henry College game from November 3, 1979. The next was a 1993 Highlight Reel of that season and though the Knights were defeated at the Division I-AA First Round Playoff Game, they were hopeful they would eventually reach Division I-A. The last VHS was a perfect tie-in to the last one as it was a recording of the Sunshine Network coverage of the UCF game against the Maine Black Bears from September 3, 1994. That footage was at least three hours long and drained my remaining time.

This would have been the only day I was at the Library this week, but I was already on campus on Wednesday for an appointment with a professor when notice of the University’s status in regards to Hurricane Irma was issued. Initially, I was going to speak with Ms. Rubin about my hours, but after watching how the staff was scrambling to get everything prepared for the hurricane, I decided lend a hand. I moved collection boxes (including the O’Shaughnessy Collection) back to the first floor archival room. There I would help move materials on the bottom shelves to higher locations, secure the carts on both the first and fifth floors, and help cover the shelves with tarp. Though I had to leave at 4:30 PM, I am fairly certain most of the work was done.

Thus concludes this minute week and the review. Other than that, expect a post next Tuesday until further notice. In light of Hurricane Irma, please be sure to be significantly prepared and stay safe this weekend.
